    Category: Commandment 5: Constant Variance

Imagine if Tiger Woods only ever played golf on his home course, in pleasant weather, against the same opponents. Do you think he could have become a true master of the game if this was the case?

I’m thinking not. True mastery means having skills that are flexible and adaptable to any situation. As challenges pop up, or something new piques your interest, a true master (regardless of the craft) will need to have the tools to succeed.

How do we develop truly flexible technique, with true control over what we’re doing? Constant variance.

Constant variance means we are always varying the environment in which we are developing our technique.

Just like Tiger Woods would want to regularly play new and different golf courses, with new and different opponents, in new and different playing conditions, pipers will want new and different tunes to play, new and different conditions, new and different types of playing, etc.

Being successful in one environment won’t make you successful, and it won’t fulfill you. Being successful regardless of environment will.
